With six issues to work with, I think Michael Uslan should have stretched out the setup a bit more instead of going, “Okay, they’re graduating from high school. And now they’re out of college.” And we’re seven years into the characters’ future in what, three pages?

While it is a six-part storyline, Archie’s future with Veronica is only the first three issues. Parts four through six are Archie seeing his future if he married Betty instead.

I read it at the store yesterday. When I first heard about Archie proposing to Veronica, you know what was the first thing that popped into my head?
(Well, actually, it was a cartoon I did in my sketchbook in 1988, but the SECOND thing that popped into my head was…)
“Family Guy.” Peter (Archie) falls in love with an heiress, Lois (Veronica) and proposes. Her father, Carter Pewterschmidt (Hiram Lodge), can’t stand him but can’t talk his daughter out of the marriage. Hilarity ensues.
I can agree with all your problems with the story as written, though. I picked up the issue and thought it was okay, but not great. I have to wonder if Michael Uslan is basing his story on how he remembers the characters to be from his own childhood. I know I haven’t bought an Archie comic in years but I have looked at one on occasion and was surprised to see that Archie and his friends were using the Internet and listening to mp3s. On second thought, that made a lot of sense; for the comic to stay relevant the gang needs to keep up with the times.
